Leventhorpe Pool :

open again for casual swimming

Sawbridgeworth Town Council are delighted to be able to announce that after constructive discussions with East Herts Council agreement has been reached whereby casual swimming will recommence at Leventhorpe from Sunday 04 November.

The Town Council have agreed to meet the cost of opening the pool on Sundays until October next year, when the new arrangements for pools in the district will become apparent. Opening hours are the same as before - 10am to 3pm.

The level of subsidy from the Town Council depends on how many people use the pool for casual swimming, so the more that the facility is used the less the Town Council will have to pay!

Roger Beeching, Town Mayor said:

“I’m delighted that swimming will start again on Sundays at the pool. The Town Council has worked hard with East Herts Council to make this come about – and we hope that the community will back this initiative by using the pool,”

Tony Jackson, Leader of East Herts Council said:

“We’re delighted that Sawbridgeworth Town Council is able to provide casual swimming on Sundays at Leventhorpe, and wish them every success in their venture. We’ve had

some difficult decisions to make over the past few months as it became clear that the previous arrangements weren’t sustainable. However, we’ve also had the opportunity to explore alternative solutions, and this is an excellent example of the two tiers of local government working together for the benefit of the community.”

Nigel Clark, District Councillor for Sawbridgeworth said:

"I am pleased that the pool is reopening on Sundays. I was disappointed when the East Herts Council Executive withdrew their financial support for this very popular service and did not respond to the massive petition they received from local people, young and old. All credit to the Town Council for stepping in and re-establishing the service. Their response has been magnificent”

Richard Bowran, Town Clerk said:

“Town councillors have responded to the strongly expressed feelings of the people of Sawbridgeworth and I am glad that we have been able to make it possible for the pool to be opened again on Sundays.”
